When first I met you, bright-eyed one,
brow creased, corners of that small mouth
turned down in concentration,
trying to understand the mind of God
as if I might help you do that;

None you sought failed in this,
not even those blue foggy mountain ridges
where eagles soared above scanty
treelines, altitude heady even as it slowed
your increasingly ragged breathing,
beloved four-footeds trotting by your side
uncomplaining, ranging wide and low
over earth’s most sacred ground;

Each conifer holds in her tangle of hair
enough wisdom to stack all the ancient
philosophers on a ship bound for nowhere
listing heavily, as may be, to one side,
while Mother Nature holds court
on the other, no comparison, try
as we might to capture a fragment
of enlightenment in this time capsule
known as life;

But you understand this now in your place
of refuge, don’t you, smilingΒ from
that small sliver on the great wheel
of continuum, and all those bored games fade
into oblivion in the face
of the knowledge you have gained
since residing in that Great Beyond.

  1. Love this Bela πŸ’•
    These words made me smile and will stay with me:
    Each conifer holds in her tangle of hair
    enough wisdom to stack all the ancient
    philosophers on a ship bound for nowhere
    listing heavily, as may be, to one side, ….

    • Thanks, Val! A good analogy to Patriarchy in general, I think – we’ve gone so far to that one side, we need the Divine Feminine to right the ship! Not that I harbor any illusions that it will happen anytime soon πŸ˜‰ Aloha ❀

  2. Beautiful (I echo), the second verse is particularly strong Bela.

    – Esme enjoying the words a great deal upon the Cloud

    • Thanks, lovely. I wrote this awhile back when a client of mine died too young. She was always trying So Hard to ‘get it right,’ bless her heart. ❀

  3. Life does enlighten…whatever its ship holds in store for us, we try to steer it in our own way, never giving up in the face of all kinds of storms and tribulations! Cabbage metaphor didn’t reach me, probably it stands in comparison to kings?

    • Ahh, Balroop, true what you say. As for the title, it’s from Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” – “The Walrus and the Carpenter,” … ‘the time has come, the walrus said, to talk of many things; like shoes and ships and sealing wax; of cabbages and kings’ (fmi: http://www.jabberwocky.com/carroll/walrus.html). I’ll bet you’ve read it at some point – it’s a classic πŸ˜‰ Blessings, Balroop! ❀

  4. The month of June is slipping ever faster away.. And I guess as we walk the world and see all laid out, as much as I try to fathom the wider plan .. I still remain more content among my own cabbages, than I think I ever would in any King’s Court πŸ˜‰

    I can see you walking with dog at your side as you look skyward, and marvel and wonder at the same time as to the Rhyme and Reason,
    I too smiled, like Val while reading.. But these words struck a chord with me …….”Mother Nature holds court
    on the other, no comparison, try as we might to capture a fragment of enlightenment in this time capsule known as life;”,,,

    As much as I think I know, it is minuscule, in the scheme of things.. But I am happy that I know what I do, for it drives away Fear knowing that we came at this time.. To play among the cabbages.. And ponder the great Beyond.. πŸ™‚

    Love and Blessings dear Friend.. ( I am enjoying my cabbages.. Chilling out in Nature.. The True Mother of us All.. xxx ❀ πŸ™‚

    • Aloha Sue: I love that the cabbage theme runs through, for you – this post was my own bit of Jabberwocky, and it is from that Lewis Carroll rhyme that I took my title (see other comments above yours).

      Enjoy your garden, and yes, June is almost behind us! Truly time is flying. You’ll be harvesting before long! As for me, it’s part of my daily year-round rhythm to walk with the dogs through the gardens, tools strapped to my waist and a bucket by my side. Snip, snip, prune, chop. The way things grow here is a marvel to behold, and keeping up with 1/2 acre of landscape is a joyful chore. Love to you, dear one! ❀

      • Yes I can only imagine the work that goes with that half acre.. for I know the amount of our plot and garden at home.. We are already harvesting lots of goodies.. and recognised the title of Cabbages and Kings.. πŸ™‚ but very apt for me right now LOL..
        Enjoy your snips and chopping… I know I do.. xxx Hugs and Blessings abound.. xxx ❀
