Turn on Your Heart Light

The heart is a lonely hunter, soaring
high above, taking the long view,
eyes ever sharp, focused on the objects
of its affection, and yet in flying free,
never asks another to suffer bonds;
Still, heart without head can be
an isolated experience; some of us,
you know, have little choice
in the matter, we are simply called
to another realm beyond logic
with which the world seems entranced;

Perhaps this is why I am beguiled
by the redtails who hunt here,
setting down whatever I am doing
to contemplate with rapture
as they glide, formidable
gaze missing nothing of import
to them anyway, landing heavily
to stand, thick wings mantling
and flexing, muscular thighs poised
to run down what they cannot grasp
in that free-falling dive, oh!

The patience of these majestic ones
as they hover over a prairie dog hole,
waiting a seeming eternity for something
to emerge as it will, sometimes;
I admire them as I do no human being,
the wild animal soul suffers no fools
as does the heart, where it suits,
the mind’s record keeper absent
or sleeping, tucked away in an old
musty library somewhere, lost
in rumination, weighing rights
and slights and caring not at all
about connections so fragile
they might cease to exist altogether.

      1. I have spent a lot of time observing the feathered friends, of different wingspans and different colours, and each is an amazing wonder in their characteristic behaviour and instinctive existence.

      2. Me too. We feed many birds and provide them with fresh water as well throughout the winter. And I have always had a special place in my heart for the raptors. Also others in nature’s cleanup crew; coyotes, wolves, bobcats leap to mind. Hawaii was a great adventure, though I am thrilled to be back among the wild creatures, observing migration patterns, seasonal emergences and such. Just saw my first lizard of the season yesterday! It was so docile I could have picked it up, but let it bask in the sun, unmolested. 🐝 🐝 🐝 too! The land is waking up! 😛

      3. Dear Bela,

        I concur with vidur sahdev. Thank you for writing about and featuring my avian colleagues, the redtails, so commendably through the fruitful results of bird-watching in conjunction with excellent poetry and photography as well as your love of Nature and wildlife. Speaking of visual imagery and poetic impression, you are cordially invited to come and fly alongside SoundEagle in the following special post that can resonate with the (embodied, corporeal and/or transcendental) Imagery and Impression as well as Being and Feeling of soaring like an eagle, whether symbolically, intellectually, aesthetically or spiritually:

  1. Bela, what a wonderful bit of work here. Your ability of descriptive picturing of events is inspiring. Tubularsock followed these winged experiences but finally had to land.

    Some of Tubularsock’s best friends are for the birds.
